It was when I landed on the land of colours and traditional values, only then I could realise its beauty and Royality. The vintage heritage that can be smelled in the air. The foot prints of love left behind on the sand dunes that get distributed all over the Thar. The people who touch your heart with their warmth and you carry the memories to cherish forever. No wonder, why they add that little amount of sweetness in their foods just to give you a call of love to come back. Yes, I experienced the colours of happiness even in a desert.
After witnessing the glory and Royal affair of the state .I went for camping in the Sam village in Thar desert, Rajasthan. That is when I met those beautiful tribe of vagabond girls who took a corner in my heart "the kalbelia girls". Kalbelia is a group of nomad "serpents" in Rajasthan. Their traditional occupation is to catch snakes and trading them from one place to another. They reside in small camps called deras and keep changing their place.
Since, the Wildlife Act of 1972 came into action the kalbelias had to drop out the profession of snake handling. Hence they took the charge to carry on and promote their culture and traditions. They travel throughout the desert and keep the tourists entertained with their "kalbelia moves".
I entered the camp where we were traditionally greeted by a small girl. She was all in her "kalbelia" attire and her innocent eyes caught mine. Later,we enjoyed the Bon fire with kalbelia dance performed by the same girl accompanied by two other women. It was an mesmerizing presentation with lots of energy and zeal.
I decided to talk to the sweet tribe and know more. I requested the small girl to give me her few minutes and she accepted it at once. She gave me a smile and told that her name is "Raveena tan tan". I loved her sense of humour and the way she being so small accepts the fun even in such a tough life. I asked Raveena to call the women performing with her so that I could interact. The other lady was Raveena's aunt and her name was Sushila. Sushila and Raveena decided to talk with me and I rolled my camera to keep the moment alive with me forever. Here's the kalbelia tribe through my lens
